What's a good length for spiking your hair?

I wanted to do something different...ive been buzzing my hair sense 2nd grade. I was thinking about doing a simple spiking.

I want the top to be 1 inch..unless that's too short(u tell me), but I want the sides shorter, I was thinking either 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch.

I'm a male btw, if that helps.

After that, I'm going to dye my hair with the Raw Blue Black for some good effects, and something to fit my goth style more hehe.

What are good lengths for the top and sides but still able to have good spikes?
